Team Building Programme for a firm of Solicitors

Team Building Programme for a large firm of South West based Solicitors, which took place on 28th March 2009

The programme was delivered from the picturesque Owl Lodge in Lacock and involved the partners and senior associates. This session was building on work Quest had undertaken with the group in 2008

The session commenced with the lively ice breaker exercise – "What gender is my Computer?" This was followed by several interactive team exercises such as a "Red versus Blue Negotiator" and the "Bigger Picture". These exercises were interspersed with a series of in depth and frank discussions which were conducted as a whole group and in smaller sub teams.

This year’s programme was based around the Five Dysfunctions model.

The Five Dysfunctions by Patrick Lencioni assess a team’s dynamics in 5 key areas to see whether:

  • There is an Absence of Trust in the team
  • A Fear of Conflict exists
  • There is a Lack of Commitment
  • There is an Avoidance of Accountability
  • There is an Inattention to Results

The delegates completed a questionnaire prior to attending the session and the accumulative results provided a team score. That in turn indicated the level of dysfunction (or not) that existed in the team and in so doing highlighted areas that needed to be addressed in the team’s development process to improve the team.

The five identified dysfunctions can be miss-interpreted as five distinct issues that can be addressed in isolation of one another. This is certainly not the case. They are in fact an interrelated chain of factors and deterioration in one area will impact on another and thereby reduce the team’s effectiveness.
